Choosing a pediatrician

All pregnancy books recommend to visit a pediatrician before you have a baby. These books recommend to interview the pediatrician and find out if the chemistry between you and the pediatrician matches. Well, we did just that yesterday and that felt really weird. We walked into the practice of a pediatrician yesterday – with no child. Every mom in the waiting area looked at us really strange. “What do those people with no child want in here?” – we could read this question from their eyes. But when they realized that we were pregnant it seemed to help. We let the receptionist know that we had an appointment and got asked to sit down for a few moments. A mother with a 2 year old was sitting next to us. She broke the ice by asking if we would know what we were expecting. She was very friendly and we chatted with her for a while. Her little one was very active. :) A really cute child with a really nice name: Hunter Lewis

We had to wait about 15 minutes and realized that the practice was empty when the doctor came out to us. They were wrapping up for the day and we were the final people waiting. It felt kind of strange asking all these questions and I almost had the feeling that these kind of interviews were actually not too common. We worked our way through the questions and things were easing up a bit. The pediatrician – a woman in her mid 40′s – made a good impression. Very casual, very dedicated and experienced. She showed us around in her practice and we got a good impression of everything. We left and went out for a quick dinner to discuss our impression. We had a good feeling about this pediatrician. A co-worker of Simone actually took his kids to the same pediatrician and had no reason to complain so far.

We will have another appointment with a different pediatrician this afternoon. I am wondering if that will be a completely different experience or more of the same. We’ll find out later.
