In the surgery room the C-section was performed by a team of doctors and nurses. They were in good mood and made a few jokes to ease up the situation. I was seated right next to Simone’s head. I was holding her hand and was partially able to see what the doctors were doing. It took about 10 minutes for them to get to the baby. They pulled the baby out and I could see that the baby had the cord around his neck. Well, that explained the problems during the contractions. The baby started crying and the feeling of relief was unbelievable for us. Logan Zachary was born.

When the contractions became stronger again the baby’s heart rate went down again. Not as bad as earlier but still to critical levels. We were very concerned but the nurse did not make a concerned impression. I’d rather had the impression that she did not read our chart at all and therefore did not know why we are actually here.

The doctor decided to add some additional embryonic fluid. She had broken the bag earlier already to increase contractions. Now she wanted to re-add fluid to support the baby. Simone also had to put on an Oxygen mask to increase the oxygen level for herself and the baby. I was side-lined and had to watch the heart rate monitor and what was going on. I seldom felt so helpless in my life as this night.

The contractions become stronger over the next hour but then suddenly dropped off when the nurse increased the level of Pitocin in the IV. For 2 hours nothing happened. No contractions, no nothing. Then the contractions came back after the Pitocin dose was increased again. They became powerful and Simone and I discussed the option of getting an epidural. Simone felt the pain but was a little bit afraid of an epidural.

The test results came in. It looked like that the baby’s lungs were fully developed. The specialist had mentioned that her opinion was that this baby would have to be delivered by C-Section. “This baby is not made for a vaginal delivery.” Simone’s OB decided to induce labor and to try a vaginal birth. I thought that would be kind of strange. First they rush you to the hospital and then they take the time to induce labor?
